About Surya Bhatt

Biography

Dr. Bhatt completed his medical degree at Mysore Medical College in India, followed by an Internal Medicine residency and chief residency at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India. He then completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Temple University/St Luke’s University Hospital, followed by fellowship training in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Occupational Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City. He has been a UAB faculty member since 2012 and is currently Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Bhatt serves as the Medical Director of the UAB Pulmonary Function and Exercise Physiology Lab, a state-of-the-art lab for pulmonary physiology testing, and as Medical Director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Dr. Bhatt’s clinical interests include Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and advanced emphysema. As part of the multidisciplinary team at the COPD Clinic, he has a particular interest in the comprehensive holistic management of COPD patients. He also evaluates patients for lung volume reduction procedures and performs endobronchial valve placements.

Dr. Bhatt also directs the “UAB Telehealth Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program”, a novel program directed at providing COPD patients with pulmonary rehabilitation at home with the help of telemonitoring and new technology.

Research Interests

Dr. Bhatt’s primary research interest is in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), with an emphasis on lung imaging, physology, pulmonary rehaibilitation, and clinical trials. He directs the UAB Lung Imaging Core, and as part of the Lung Health Center, he is also involved in multiple NIH sponsored and pharma trials including the COPDGene and SPIROMICS studies.

Awards & Recognition

In 2017, he was one of UAB's Pittman Scholars and was awarded the Dean's Excellence Award for Research by the UAB School of Medicine. He was also awarded the Dr. Linda Hall Innovation Award from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). In 2016, he was awarded the Early Career Achievement Award by the Clinical Problems Assembly of the American Thoracic Society (ATS). Dr. Bhatt has also been named a "Top 10 Teacher" by the Department of Medicine in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
