About Kevin Smith

Biography

J. Kevin Smith, M.D., Ph.D. did his undergraduate training at the University of Michigan, followed by medical school and graduate school at Louisiana State University in Shreveport and The University of Kentucky. After completing his residency training in Diagnostic Radiology and Fellowship in Abdominal imaging at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he joined the faculty in the abdominal imaging section.

Dr. Smith directs activities at the adjacent Birmingham VA Hospital where he is the chief of the diagnostic radiology service. He is a four-time recipient of the Gary Barnes Distinguished Faculty award for excellence in resident education. Residents appreciate his willingness to help out and teach above and beyond the call of duty. He was the creator and webmaster of the original UAB Radiology Web site, which included one of the first on-line teaching files in America.

Research interests lie in minimally invasive cancer therapy, Dual energy CT, non-invasive vascular imaging, computers in medicine, and medical education.
