About Joel Funk

Biography

Dr. Funk is an expert and key thought leader in the diagnosis and treatment of benign prostate obstruction (BPH). After completing his residency training at The University of Arizona-College of Medicine, he went on to further training at Addensbrooke Hospital in England in 2009. He was the first urologist to perform a holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) in Southern Arizona and one of the few surgeons nationally with two decades of experience in this technique. Dr Funk has performed over 3000 HoLEP cases to date and is a frequent invited lecturer and plenary speaker at both national and international meetings.

Dr. Funk has extensive experience in the surgical and non-surgical management of prostate and bladder outlet obstruction in men. Additionally, he is an active female urology specialist with expertise in robotic sacrocolpopexy, transvaginal prolapse repair, vaginal mesh excision and anti-incontinence surgery.

Research Interests

Dr Funk's research interests include the long term outcomes of HoLEP surgery as well as translational science interest in the pathogenesis of BPH. He also has ongoing research into laser technology and impacts on surgical outcomes and development of clinical care pathways for patient with BPH and prostate cancer.
