About Jim Cimino

Biography

Dr. Cimino is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Informatics Institute at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. His first informatics paper was presented at the 1981 SCAMC, and he completed a three-year research fellowship in medical informatics at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard. After 20 years as a professor of medicine and biomedical informatics at Columbia University, he moved to the NIH in 2008 and then to UAB in 2015. Research interests include medical concept representation, clinical decision support and electronic health records. He is known for biomedical terminology “desiderata”, infobuttons, and the NIH’s Biomedical Translational Research Information System (BTRIS). Fellowships include the American College of Medical Informatics, the American College of Physicians and the New York Academy of Medicine, and he is a member of the National Academy of Medicine. AMIA awards include the President's Award and the Morris Collen Award. He continues medical practice.
