About Jasmine Thum
Biography
Dr. Jasmine Thum is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon-scientist specializing in epilepsy, movement disorders, psychiatric neurosurgery, and nerve injuries. Her practice embodies the union of advanced science and human connection. She joined UAB from UCSF after completing fellowships in Epilepsy/Functional Neurosurgery and Peripheral Nerve Surgery (MGH–Harvard). She earned engineering degrees at USC, an M.D. from the Harvard-MIT HST program, and completed neurosurgery residency at UCLA. Dr. Thum offers advanced treatments including complex epilepsy surgery, neuromodulation, and is pioneering incisionless Focused Ultrasound at UAB. She co-leads development of pediatric neuromodulation at Children’s of Alabama and believes that every child deserves a life uninterrupted. She is the Director of Adult Peripheral Nerve Surgery, performing nerve transfers and brachial plexus repair to reanimate paralyzed limbs. She brings precision, innovation, and compassionate partnership with patients to every case.
Title
Director, Adult Peripheral Nerve Center ; Co-Director, Functional and Epilepsy Fellowship ; PI, The Consciousness Lab
Faculty Appointment
Assistant Professor
Research Interests
“Translating neuroengineering into transformative neurosurgical care.”
With a joint appointment as an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Thum leads research at the intersection of neurosurgery, neuroscience, and technology. Her lab explores how brain networks support consciousness—and how epilepsy, anesthesia, and trauma alter awareness. She studies brain rhythms in patients undergoing depth electrode monitoring (sEEG) or neuromodulation (DBS) to better understand the neural basis of consciousness. Her team also investigates how to predict and enhance recovery after peripheral nerve transfer surgery, using tools like electrical stimulation, physiologic monitoring, and AI. This work directly informs her surgical practice, with the goal of restoring both function and awareness in patients facing complex neurological challenges.
