About James Markert, Jr.
Biography
Dr. Markert is the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at University of Alabama at Birmingham and has been a faculty member in neurological surgery for since 1996. He attended college at Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, then obtained his MD/MPH from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and School of Public Health in New York City. Subsequently, he trained in Surgery and Neurological Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. Markert also completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in the area of molecular neurosurgery under the direction of Dr. Robert Martuza. Following the completion of his residency, Dr. Markert took a position at University of Alabama at Birmingham in neurological surgery and simultaneously completed a research associate fellowship in the laboratory of National Academy of Science member, Dr. Bernard Roizman. Dr. Markert's career has included clinical neurosurgery as well as laboratory and translational research to develop novel treatments for brain tumors; he has also been active in the education of residents, medical students and undergraduates. Dr. Markert has been very active in organized neurosurgery on a national level, having served on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons.

Research Interests
Dr. Markert's major laboratory and clinical research interests are in the development of novel treatments for brain tumors utilizing molecular biology, viral vectors, and gene therapy. His current laboratory research focuses on engineered herpes simplex virus-1 as a vector for immunologic (e.g., cytokines and cell surface antigens) and antiangiogenic means of treating primary and metastatic central nervous system neoplasms as well as combined use with novel immunotherapeutics.
