About Corey Speers

Biography

I’m a radiation oncologist and physician-scientist at UAB, where I serve as Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology. I specialize in breast cancer, including higher-risk subtypes such as triple-negative and inflammatory breast cancer, and I focus on delivering the most effective radiation treatment while minimizing side effects and disruption to your life. I believe in clear communication, shared decision-making, and close teamwork with your surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists, and supportive care team. Nationally and internationally, I help shape standards of care through leadership roles with ASCO, ASTRO, and as a member of the NCCN Breast Cancer Guidelines Panel—one of only five radiation oncologists in the U.S. to serve on this committee that shapes the standard of care for treatment of breast cancer internationally. I also lead clinical and laboratory research—often through clinical trials—developing new ways to make radiation work better, including combining radiation with targeted therapies.

Research Interests

Improving outcomes in aggressive breast cancers by personalizing radiation therapy and developing radiosensitizing strategies (e.g., pairing radiation with targeted therapies such as PARP inhibitors and CDK4/6 inhibitors). My translational program connects laboratory discovery to investigator-initiated and cooperative group clinical trials, with a focus on precision radiation and biomarkers that predict who benefits most from radiation.
