About Bob Bourge

Biography

Professor of Medicine, Radiology, and Surgery, Senior Vice Chair of the UAB Department of Medicine. Dr. Bourge joined the faculty at UAB in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease in 1984, where he has served with distinction in numerous leadership roles in clinical cardiology at UAB Hospital and the BVAMC. In 1988, Dr. Bourge established the Pulmonary Vascular Disease Clinical and Research Program at UAB which is among the busiest centers of its kind, seeing more than 1,200 patients and accepting more than 200 referrals from around the country each year. In that same year, Dr. Bourge collaborated with colleagues in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at UAB to launch the first multi-disciplinary Ventricular Assist Device program in the Southeast. Most recently, he has recently worked to establish the UAB Xenotransplantation Institute at UAB to make organ transplantation possible for patients.

Dr. Bourge’s research interests include translational research and therapeutic trials in pulmonary vascular disease and advanced heart and lung disease. He is also actively involved in health informatics and computerized applications in cardiovascular disease that are directed toward streamlining and improving patient care.
