About Cheri Canon

Biography

Cheri L. Canon, M.D is the president of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (HSF) and chief physician executive of UAB Health System. She was the prior chair and the Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair of Radiology at UAB for 13 years. She earned her degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB)and completed her residency at UAB. 

She is the president of the American Board of Radiology and serves on its Board of Governors. A former vice president and board member of the American College of Radiology (ACR), Dr. Canon received the ACR Gold Medal in 2021 and the Alabama Academy of Radiology’s Silver Medal in 2022. Dr. Canon served on the inaugural ACR Radiology Leadership Institute (RLI) and received the ACR RLI Lawrence R. Muroff Luminary Award. She is a past president of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD) and co-created the LEAD women's leadership program. Dr. Canon was recognized with the American Association of Women in Radiology Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award in 2020 and the UTMB Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumni Award in 2022.

Research Interests

Canon’s research interests include diseases of the esophagus and imaging of postoperative patients. Additional areas of interest include resident education, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development. In addition to her peer-reviewed publications, her editorial experience includes one book contribution, multiple book chapters, and four leadership webinars with the American College of Radiology Leadership Institute. Furthermore, Canon has served as an editorial reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Roentgenology, World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Journal of the American College of Radiology. In addition to her multiple publications, she has given over 170 presentations at various events.
